Woolworths ESG : Just Wage Initiative
Nomtha Ngumbela
The South African minimum wage is a hotly debated topic given that many are of the view that the amount does not represent a figure that any South African can be expected to survive off of as it does not provide the adequate social security a wage should. In 2022 the legal minimum wage was adjusted upward by 6.9% to R23.19 per hour from R21.59. If one considers a worker who is employed for 8 hours a day and works Monday to Friday, they would roughly receive R3,710 per month.
